Privacy Policy

HabitLens ("we", "our", or "the app") is built with one goal: help you understand your own phone habits — without sending any of that data anywhere. This policy explains exactly what we collect, where it lives, and how it is used.

1. What data we collect

HabitLens collects the following data entirely on your device:

• App usage events — which watched apps you open, and when
• Behavioral signals — phantom checks (picking up phone without opening an app), deep sinks (sessions over 20 minutes), late-night usage, and morning reflex (first app of the day)
• Declared intentions — when you tap Learning, Utility, or Bored at the intercept prompt
• Your name — the display name you enter in Settings, stored only on-device
• App preferences — which apps you have chosen to monitor, notification times, and timer settings

We do not collect passwords, contacts, messages, photos, location, or any personal identifiers.

2. Where your data is stored

All data is stored locally on your device in an encrypted Room (SQLite) database and Android SharedPreferences. None of your usage data ever leaves your device. There are no servers, no cloud sync, no analytics SDKs, and no third-party data processors.

3. How your data is used

Your data is used exclusively to generate the insights, charts, and behavioral signals shown inside the app. It is never used for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond improving your own awareness.

4. Data export and deletion

You can export all your data as a CSV at any time from Settings → Export my data. You can permanently delete all data from Settings → Clear all data. Uninstalling the app also removes all stored data.

5. Permissions we request

• Usage Access (PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS) — required to detect which app is in the foreground so we can show the intercept prompt. This permission is never used to transmit data.
• Display over other apps (SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW) — required to show the intercept pill above your current app.
• Post Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS) — required on Android 13+ to send your optional evening recap and morning nudge notifications.
• Foreground Service — required to keep the tracking service running while the screen is on.
• Receive Boot (RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED) — required to restart the tracking service after a device reboot.

6. Children's privacy

HabitLens is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

7. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
